Chief Viverette retired in May 2007 after serving in the Gaithersburg Police Department (MD) for 28 years, with 21 years serving as the Chief of Police. Mary Ann continues to work as a management consultant for municipal government organizations, serving as a subject matter expert in pattern and practice investigations with the U.S. Department of Justice, and is currently under contract as a Court-appointed Federal Monitor for the New Orleans Police Department.  

Chief Viverette holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement/ Criminology from the University of Maryland (1986) and a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Maryland (1998). She graduated from the FBI National Academy, Session 155 in 1988.

Chief Viverette is a Past-President (2006) of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. She was the first woman to serve as President of the Association in the IACP’s 113 year history. She has over twenty-two years of experience as an assessor and Team Leader with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and also served as a CALEA Commissioner and Vice President of the Board of Officers.  The Gaithersburg Police Department has been nationally accredited since 1993 and the agency was awarded Flagship Agency status in 2007.
