Ben

Chief Newman is the Director of Public Safety, Chief of Police at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. As Chief, Ben is responsible for safety, security and law enforcement services for the university.  Prior to being named Chief at SIU he served as a Lieutenant at the University of Wisconsin – Madison responsible for CALEA, WILEAG and IACLEA Accreditation and Infrastructure Security.  Before entering law enforcement Ben spent time in the fire service

Ben received a Bachelor of Science degree from Francis Marion University and earned his Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville.  Ben is also a graduate of the 113th Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. During his law enforcement career, Ben has been a trainer in defense tactics, firearms, rapid deployment, less lethal munitions, and professional communication skills.  He is also a use of force analyst, trained by the Force Science Institute. Ben has reviewed use of force cases, has been deposed during use of force incidents, and is fluent in accepted law enforcement standards.
